I can’t believe the amount of reading I’ve been doing lately! I feel like I need to slow down a bit, to be honest.

This week has been pretty fantasy-filled, for the most part! I’m dedicating pretty much all of this week to my first-time read of The Lord of the Rings series. Previously I would have waited between books, but I want to see how my experiences differed with reading them back-to-back. I’m glad I finally started this series, and I look forward to continuing it this week.

I hope your February is going well, and filled with lots of good reads!

Currently Reading:

The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien

In ancient times the Rings of Power were crafted by the Elven-smiths, and the One Ring, possessed by Sauron, enabled him to rule above all others. But one day the One Ring was taken from him, and many years later it fell into the hands of the hobbit Bilbo Baggins. This story explores Bilbo’s journey across Middle Earth to destroy the Ring by casting it into the Cracks of Doom.

I’m currently in the middle of The Two Towers, which is the second book (or third for me since I read The Hobbit first). Part of my excitement is picking up the little bits from pop culture that I know from this series, so I’m excited about the character’s journeys and when we will discover certain parts of Middle-earth that I’m already at least semi-familiar with.

Recently Read:

When the Moon Was Ours by Anna-Marie McLemore

When the Moon Was Ours follows Sam and Miel, considered to be strange by everyone who knows them, knowing little about their lives before they came to town. Sam is known for the moon he paints and hangs in trees, and Miel is known for the roses that grow out of her wrists. But even Sam and Miel stay away from the Bonner girls, who are thought to be witches. The girls want Miel’s roses because they believe their scent can make anyone fall in love with them, and they’re ready to expose all of Sam and Miel’s secrets to have them.

I read Wild Beauty by the same author and really enjoyed the author’s lyrical writing, so when this book was chosen for one of my book clubs I was so excited to read this. On top of the writing, I loved the exploration of the main characters and their identities, and the magical elements of the world that surrounded them.

Since last week, I’ve completed both The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring. I could see how detail-oriented Fellowship was in comparison, but regardless I still really enjoyed them both. I’m a big fan of excessive worldbuilding and attention to detail, so I very much appreciated the amount of detail that not only went into this series, but even corrections and updates made over time to reflect that. My editions in particular go into that a little bit, and it’s definitely something that I’ve liked learning about (even if just for a few pages).

A Court of Silver Flames by Sarah J. Maas

A Court of Silver Flames follows Nesta and her life after the events of the war with Hybern. After a long period of struggling with her trauma alone, she is forced back into the eyes of The Inner Circle, and is paired with Cassian to help her train and heal from her experiences. Meanwhile, the human queens who returned during the war have formed a new alliance, and one that threatens the barely-stable peace that has settled since the war. And Cassian and Nesta may be the only ones that can stop their efforts.

Reading this book was a bit of a last-minute decision on my part. I wasn’t sure if I was going to continue with this series or not, but I knew this book was going to be very different and decided to give it a try. I liked the way Nesta’s perspective was used to portray the Inner Circle, as well as the exploration of trauma recovery and how it’s not linear and varies from person to person. I did think that there were some plot elements that could have been better though. But I also read this whole book in one weekend. So…I’m still not sure if I’m going to continue or not!

Up Next:

I do have one more book club read that I want to start, but I do think I am going to continue with the next books in The Lord of The Rings. I have this bad habit of stopping in the middle of series and I don’t want to do that here, especially when I’m really enjoying it so far.

That’s all for this week’s WWW Wednesday. Leave a comment if you participated this week too so I can read your post – or let me know what you’re currently reading below!
