Shadowplay

Shadowplay by Joseph O’Connor

Shadowplay is a historical fiction novel set in Victorian London. It is about Henry Irving starting a new theatre and mainly follows Bram Stoker, who is responsible for managing it. It also hones in on Stoker’s early literary works and how his time at the theater influenced Dracula.

This is a book I received from NetGalley. I’m about halfway through the book, and so far it’s been a pretty atmospheric read. I don’t have any prior knowledge of Stoker’s life, but this historical fiction novel provides some interesting context, and I do enjoy following him as a character.

Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng

This book follows a Chinese-American family during the 1970’s. Lydia is Marilyn and James’ favorite child, and their expectations and assumptions of her are high. But when Lydia is found dead in the lake by their home, their family is turned upside down, and their visions for their children are destroyed.

For the first time in a while I’m reading a book not on my physical TBR and not from NetGalley. My rule right now is if I want to break from my TBR pile, I have to do the audiobook. But now audiobooks are growing on me again, so maybe I need to take a different route with this. I’m also halfway through this book, and while I did like Little Fires Everywhere a little more, this has so far proven to be a very good debut novel.

A Brief History of Time

A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking

A Brief History of Time describes the timelines behind many of our major scientific studies while being accessible to scientists and non-scientists alike. From black holes to wormholes, Hawking details all of the scientists who have contributed to these theories and how we use theories in our studies (despite not being “law”).

I’m glad I picked up this one! There were some things I knew from my college coursework but I learned a lot, especially in terms of the history of all of these discoveries. There were some sections where I could definitely see it being more difficult to understand if you don’t have a great math background, but I do believe Hawking addresses this in a similar book he wrote to help with that.

You can read my full review on my Goodreads here.

Mortmain Hall by Martin Edwards

Mortmain Hall follows amateur sleuth Rachel Savernake during the 1930’s. While hosting a gathering featuring those who have cheated the gallows, a body is found at the base of a cliff. At first, this is considered to be an accidental death –  but Rachel Savernake is not so sure.

This is another book I received from NetGalley. I haven’t read a mystery like this in a while, so it’ll be nice to read one again. It seems like this week I’ve deviated from my regular TBR a bit, but this is the last of my NetGalley reads for now. After this, I’ll be returning to my regular TBR. I’m thinking The Power will be next.
